Lucid Lynx becomes totally unresponsive sometimes when using FireFox

Hi all,

I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago (from Karmic) and although everything went smoothly, I've been having this problem:

Every now and then, when I'm on FireFox, the whole computer freezes and is unresponsive. The mouse doesn't work, I can't open the terminal, I can't do anything! My only option is to press the restart button on my laptop.

I don't know if this is of any relevance, but I use UbuntuStudio, but have been using the proper Linux Kernel. I only selected the RealTime kernel if I'm working on audio editors, which I haven't done since updating to Lucid.

My laptop is an HP pavilion zv5000. It has an ATI 9000/9100 graphics card, about 768 mp of ram, and a P4 3GHz processor.

Any clues why this might be happening? Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks everyone,

Alex

Okay.
How many programs are running during the crash/freeze?
How many instances of firefox? Background tabs, etc.
Are you running syslogd or any other logging services?
Did you see if it was an xorg problem?
How is firefox setup? Is it optimized and secured?

Hi Mr Bisquit,

It's usually only FireFox that runs during the crash. On rare occasions maybe Nautilus as well, displaying a folder.

Only one instance of FireFox, with an average of 2-3 tabs. Come to think of it, I'll try and make note of how many tabs are running during the next crash, good idea!

I've never used syslogd, I don't know what it is... (yes, I'm quite new to linux...)

I'm not sure about xorg either, I remember coming across it a few months ago, but I'm not sure what it does either...

These are my FireFox extensions:

1-Click YouTube Video Downloader 1.4

Adblock Plus 1.2

Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.9rc2

UnMHT 5.6.0

And these are my plugins:

DivX Web Player 1.4.0.23

IcedTea NPR web browser plugin (using IcedTea6 1.8 (6b18-1.8-0ubuntu1))

iTunes Application Detector

QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6

Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45

VLC multimedia plugin (compatible Totem 2.30.1)

Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)

Thanks for your help Mr Bisquit, I really appreciate it! Let me know if you need other info

Alex

By the way, I don't know if this helps, but the crash/freeze usually happens when FireFox has been on for a while. It'll never happen during the first 5 minutes for instance.

Hope this helps

Alex
