Lost Sound modules in Kubuntu (kernel 2.6.24, i386)

Hello everyone. I just got done fixing another problem with this particular Ubuntu/KDE setup. It is my brother in law's, so I'm not able to get to it very often. The first problem was a very nasty one in which it would not even begin to boot because the kernel did not recognize the drive it was trying to boot from. The only way I could fix it was to manually copy a kernel image and modules (2.6.22) from a MEPIS live cd.

But of course I was not satisfied with that solution, so I decided it would be best to install the newer kernel from Hardy. That seemed to work fine, but now the sound does not work at all. Of course, the Ubuntu devs, for some brainless reason, seem to have removed the command "alsaconf". By now I am sorely regretting not just installing Debian, though I still want this to work. I don't want to reinstall.

The problem is, the modules are apparently not loaded. I didn't have time to diagnose the problem further. Is there any step I may have missed in installing the newer kernel?

This is an older HP computer (1ghz), and I'm not sure exactly what the hardware is. I should have checked while I was there. Grr!

You might need to make some changes in /etc/modprobe.conf to set up alsa correctly.

Ubuntu has two separate packages for the linux kernel image and the modules. So I had to install not just linux-image-generic, but ubuntu-modules-generic (or something like that) as well. Seemed odd to me. Do other distros do this?
