Lost Audio

I've looked at numerous threads related to lost audio and tried serveral solutions without success. Here' my situation. I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 on a Dell Dimension 2300. I had audio until a week or so ago, then lost it, for unknown reasons. According to the Dell specs, the audio is an integrated ADI 1885 Audio. The audio was working from the start of installing Linux (Mandrake, Mandriva, now Ubuntu) and I paid no attention to how it was configured. When I lost the audio and searched for solutions, I found and installed Alsamixer. That fixed nothing but then I may not have it configured correctly. I've thought about installing a new sound card. What do you think? Is it worth a try or is there a setup solution somewhere? And what sound card is sure to work under Ubuntu?

I don't see an Integrated ADI 1885 Audio in any of the shell searches. Here's what I get:

$ aplay -l

Have you booted from the Live CD and tested the audio? Considering that it was working properly, it might have fried on you.

If that's the case, I would recommend a SoundBlaster. It's one of the most popular, and the most widely supported.

I'm not sure with Dell, but you *might* have to run BIOS Setup and disable AVI audio to properly install a PnP sound card.

Thanks Dragonslayer. . . I haven't try booting from the Live CD. I'll give it a try and perhaps order a new sound card. Jerry
