Looking for the right log

Hello,

I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 on a Compaq Presario R3440CA. Since I got the machine about a year ago I have not been able to get the Broadcomm wireless card to work. lspci sees the card, I have followed direction on the Ubuntu forum of others who were successful to get a wireless connection.

Is there a log or some out put to at least give me a clue as to why the card will not stay on or detect a wireless network? I meet all the requirement listed on the How-To's.

Thanks

Assuming you have the correct driver probably with ndsiwrapper, there are still some things to do. I recommend you right click the upper panel and add the Network Monitor applet. It gives you quick access to the connection status and in the case of WiFi the signal strength. A network manager is required to select from the available wireless signals. I recommend wifi-radar. Note if you have both the Gnome network manager and wifi-radar installed they will interfere with each other. The last thing to do is to select the network interface to use for the Internet. To do this use System-> Administration-> Networking. This will allow you to select the active Internet connection. Note the wifi hardware must be detected or you won't get the option to select it. eth0 is your Ethernet port, eth1 should be the name of the wifi port. Continue with this post if you still have problems. A word of caution about HOWTOs. They may be specific to a different version, distro or wifi chip set that might differ from yours. The are on occasion a tutorial on how a user "thinks they made it work" and not on an in depth understanding. The open source is great because lots of people want to help. Their desire may not be supported by expertise. Advice will frequently differ. Make an attempt to understand all that is offered before following any it. Carefully document what you did for future reference or to be able to undo if it doesn't work.
