Live CD 5.04 DSL Modem Detection

I have a DSL modem (NOT a router) connected to my ethernet card, but it does not show up in the device manager or the network configuration tool. I ran pppoeconfig, and everything appeared to work, but netstat -rn still doesn't show a DSL device of any type. Does the live CD contain all the necessary tools for PPPoE? If so can someone point me toward some instructions on how to configure my DSL modem. I am unfamiliar with Ubuntu, and not sure where else to look. I couldn't find any threads on the Ubuntu forums that dealt with this issue, so I thought I would ask here.
