I am running Xubuntu on a P-III, 500 MHz, 640Mb RAM, and it works quite well (a bit slow to start up, but for the rest very workable)
I wanted to upgrade to linux686 (it _IS_ a P-III, after all) but now it doesn't shutdown properly. It gets all the way through the shutdown sequence, but then it says 'Will power down' or somesuch, and it only stops the disk. The fan keeps spinning, the blinkenlights remain on, and the only way to power down is to press the power button.
linux386 shuts down perfectly normally, so I kicked out linux686, which seems a pity.
??? Sounds like an ACPI problem. You could try the I586 or I686 vers. without ACPI, but then that utterly removes little tools like power button handling via software.
Yes, but ... how is ACPI influenced by a different compilation? As far as I understood, linux-686 is identical to linux-386, just other compiler flags?
I'm using SuSE 10.2 and have the same problem but do not have a "modules" file in my "etc" folder! Please help!! My computer doesn't have a reset button so I cannot even shut the computer down without touching the wall socket!
PS. Im a bit of a linux newbie and havnt used SuSE before!
I have no experience with opensuse, so I cannot help you.
I only can tell you that hijacking an existing (and old) thread is not a good strategy. I suggest you open a new thread in the appropriate forum section (for instance the suse-specific section)
