/lib/cpp fails sanity check on KUbuntu

I am trying to install Anjuta-1.2.4, a C/C++ compiler for Linux. I am using KUbuntu and in order to install Anjuta I must install pkgconfig.

I go to my root terminal and type "./configure" in the pkgconfig file.

I get this:

/lib/cpp fails sanity check.

I am using gcc which i installed using sudo apt-get install gcc

why am I failng the sanity check!

All I want to do is install Anjuta!

Since I am new to Linux any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Ok, I searched around and found that post about this. But now I have a new problem:

I am trying to install GCC-4.0.1

when I type ./configure it says this:

"building in the soruce directory is not supported in this release."

how do I conigure it so i can run "make"?

ok, nm, I installed GCC-4.0.1, but I'm still failing the sanity check...

make a dir called..........gcc-build
cd into it and configure from there.......example...
Code:
../gcc-GCC-4.0.1 ./configure

<edit/> the sanity check is telling you that the gcc version you have installed........IS NOT the gcc-version used to compile the current running kernel.......SO......you should re-compile a new kernel........

sadly, being new to Linux, I don't even know how to compile a kernel, also I figured something out:

Konsole:

Alternativly, you can configure ANJUTA_CFLAGS and ANJUTA_LIBS so they no longer need to call pkgconfig.

They are enviornment variables, how do I change them?
