Question laptop mouse speed control in Ubuntu??

Dell laptop with Ubuntu 7.04 installed; mouse pad movement is jerky, and erratic at times. Is there a way to control speed or acceleration. Being a real novice, can someone give me detailed instructions?
Many thanks

Thanks for the info on mouse speed. I had missed it completely, and it now behaves correctly.
