Kubuntu upgrade 7.04 to 7.10 locked up Adept Manager

I attempted to upgrade from Kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10 Via Adept Manager. All went well until the install. The program stopped and I finally closed it. Now when I attempt to use Adept Manager get a message "Another process is using system database (probably some other Adept application or Apt-Get or Aptitude. Please close other applications.¨
Being somewhat of a newbie. Help.

ps -e | grep "dpkg"
then if it is running
kill <pidofdpkg>

Sorry for the delay. Thanks!! It appears that is not the problem. I am now back to the book. Did a check of all open items, one by one and am now trying to learn what each actually does.
Any other ideas would be welcome.
