Kubuntu install dwl-650+ wifi card issue

I am attempting to install Breezy on my Thinkpad 600x. My dwl-650 is picked up but dhcp will not co-operate. I am told that my network is ether slow or not using dhcp. What should I do? Continue the install and deal with the card later or lie down and give up? My wifi network is up and running and issuing ips when requested. This problem also occurs on my work network --- same setup. Just curious.

When I attempt to enable either my eth0 or wlan0 using Kubuntu's "system settings" , the status of the card changes to enabled and then changes back to disabled. Clearly there is something I am missing here --- the cards are both recognised (wlan0 = dwl-650+) and eth0 = standard pcmcia card that works in Debian/Mandriva etc.

Okay --- to rule out hardware failure, I reinstalled Debian and my PCMCIA card works fine. I don't know about the wifi card yet ---- I would need to compile a driver. I restarted the Kubuntu install and the autoconfig was unable to get an ip from my DHCP server. Of course, I realise that there are ways round this but I use various networks and it's much easier to have an ip assigned automatically. I do wish to use Kubuntu but am hampered by this lack of network.
Question >> Does anyone know if there is an issue with Kubuntu and PCMCIA cards and/or network config? Is it a kernel issue? I tried manually setting up my LAN card but that failed miserably.
Thanks

esteeven,

I am currently having the same problems you describe, but I don't understand your solution of

acpi=off

You turned it off? Or found it off and had to turn it on?

How is this done?

Thank. Sean.

Oh! In the boot loader right?

Well, you were right. With acpi=off, my machine stopped freezing once connected to an unsecure network (still haven't gotten it to connect to my WEP secured network).

I didn't realize that older hardware had problems with acpi, and I have a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop (500Mhz, 128MB). It doesn't get much older than that!

I do get an awful sound out of the speakers now during internet usage (like downloading). But that's a separate question.

Thanks for posting your own replies!

Thanks. Sean.
