Kubuntu GUI shows up as garbage

I downloaded the install CD for Kubuntu Dapper. The install menu opened fine, and I selected install Kubuntu. It loaded stuff for a while, and *phuff*, suddenly the screen was full of garbage.

After some googling I found a page that suggested downloading the alternate CD in case installing fails. I did so, and the text-based install worked fine. When it was time to boot into the new installation, the same garbage appeared again.

I've tried some googling but I can't really find anything useful... Perhaps you could give me some ideas.

My machine is

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
1G of RAM
XFX's GeFore 6600-based PCI-E video card w/ 256M of memory
Asus A8N5X motherboard w/ nForce4

Thanks in advance

EDIT: I managed to boot into Kubuntu by selecting "Start Kubuntu in safe graphics mode" or something like that. However, this seems to be run from the CD. Is there any way I could use my installation on the hard drive in this mode?

I found this http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=187177

I can't get to the command line when I boot up into the real installation. Any remedies for this?

Gah, that was so stupid. I got to the command line, and did what was suggested in the thread my own link points to. It seems to have solved the problem.

Someone also had problems with PCI-E video card from nVidia. Just download drivers through apt-get or synaptic, and enable nvidia driver instead of nv.
