Kubuntu a good choice for me?
 

Evenin' all,
I have a P3 800 128mb RAM 16mb Video Card 10Gb HDD Compaq Laptop, I have my own installation of Debian running XFCE (not without its own problems). I am looking for a stable GUI for pubication of documents and home office stuff.
I've looked at Kabuntu, looks great, but I see some possible problems.
1. I can only net install (I have a Debian Sarge CD) as I don't have a CD burner.
2. KDE (from past experience) is memory heavy, would Kabuntu run smoothly on this relatively aging machine?
Any way, I would appreciate your feedback and advice.

KDE is as heavy as ever. What may be an idea is to get an Ubuntu cd shipped to you so you can test it - the hardware requirements are the same. If it works, go to Kubuntu. Or stay with Ubuntu if you don't mind Gnome.

You might just get away with a PIII 800, but I doubt it. I tried installing on a friends PIII 600 the other day and it wouldn't play. He also had 128mb of ram and I have a feeling that was the main problem, although the processor didn't help.

I have Ubuntu working fine on an apple laptop 500 mhz. Works nice ands smooth even better than Panther!

But if this doesn't work there are many DSL types linux, they are working well on small machines and are not so demanding because they don't use heavy Window managers like KDE or Gnome.

I have a similar computer, and I can say that Kubuntu runs at a satisfactory pace. It's a little slow, but if you turn off most of the GUI effects (does anyone really need fading menus?) it runs at an alright speed. Of course, not as fast as the same machine would with say IceWM, but still.

with ubuntu (a very good os) u can have the kde desktop if u favor that but they dont ship kubuntu cds as they do with ubuntu. if u have 6-10 weeks depending on where you are i would say get it i would have to say i got 10 and out of 10 id say 4 are good so get a bunch u never know what might come up in future.
