kubuntu a bit slow

Hello!

I have been installing codecs on kubuntu. But playbakc is not smooth. it looks like i am swapping too much. is there any reason why kubuntu is slower than other distros on same machine? does kubuntu provide 686 kernels?

Thanks

It does provide 686 kernels. It defaults to 386 to be "safe," though. You can install the 686 ones through Adept.
