Kubuntu 6.06 wont boot anymore

I have Kubuntu 6.06 installed on a Dell Dimension 4500 and suddenly it will no longer boot. The last time I used it I found that I was getting no sound from the speakers. I booted up, started Amarok and tried to play some music and had no sound. I then tried to play some system sounds and then a CD to see if it was an mp3 issue or more system wide; I got no sound from anything. I then rebooted the system and it just hangs at the Kubuntu 'logo'. Everything seems fine at first, the text scrolls by as usual and everything is labeled as 'ok' and the status bar keeps increasing. Once the status bar is complete and the text stops scrolling though, nothing more happens; I just stare at a static kubuntu logo.

Any ideas? Thanks.

When you boot up, hit e (edit) during the boot selection, and change the boot settings - remove the quiet and splash options from the kernel line.
This will give you much more text in the boot sequence.

Once you find some messages that don't look happy, google them.
It will be some piece of hardware that the install hasn't got quite right.

I have just had this too.
I just installed a new 386 kernel, that was labelled -24, but when selected said that it would get a 2.6.15-26 image
This does not seem to match the latest nvidia-glx driver version
Fortunately I also have the -23 kernel, which still boots

I found out what the problem was. I did an update earlier in the day and it corrupted my system. Here is the link:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Latest_Ub...pdate_breaks_X
I followed the instructions and now everything works.

I am back to the sound issue though. I have no sound at all but in kinfocenter I still see my soundcard. Any ideas?
