Kubuntu 16.04 LTS Installation just hosed my large backup drive?!? (horror story)
I just installed 16.04 (stable?) onto my laptop. Unfortunately, I left my large backup disk plugged in to a usb slot on my laptop during the install.
(I use this 8TB drive to contain backups from multiple smaller systems. So its encrypted.)
Now to my dismay, I discovered the LUKS header has been overwritten on the backup drive. It has a new UUID. The pass-phrase has been reset to the pass-phrase of the new Kubuntu install (I used "Guided LVM encryption" installation on the laptop.) And the encrypted content of my backup drive says "mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'" when I try to mount it on another machine.
And no, I did not make a backup of my backup!!!!
I'm tempted to try resetting the passphrase on the backup to the old phrase...but not before asking for help. I don't actually think that can work.
This represents a SERIOUS loss for me. Can someone ANYONE pleas help??
AFTERTHOUGHT: I have a feeling that kubuntu decided I wanted multiple physical volumes all in the same set...so there will be problems with the inode tables if I boot without the backup disk plugged in. OTOH: This implies the drive contents are unmolested...if I only had the old salt, digest, etc....which means I'm totally hosed. Someone tell me it ain't so?
