Since I've switched to maverick, I'm having annoying problems to login.
Especially to switch from user when the PC is locked, instead of a mouse pointer I get a weird rectangle of 2cm by 2 which is filled up with colored stripes. When switching to the original user, it's the usual pointer.
In worst , the screen is totally filled up with colored stripes with again this rectangular pointer and I get no login screen at all. All I can do is to reboot.
In other cases, I also have probs to login when just booted up. In this case, I see the KDE spash-screen loading but at some point It is stuck and all I can do ... is to reboot.
So, these are very annoying problems as you guess. With 10.4, I had very occasionally (maybe 2-3 times is half a year) problems with the mouse when switching user. Now it is almost every day, and it almost everyday hangs.
So, could someone please have a solution for this please?
I already compositin off (since I have had already a few probs with it, needed to adjust krwinc manually and turn security checks off in order to make it work), but it has the same results.
I also think it has something to do with the graphics drivers, but I'm using a Ati radeon X700 and given the tutorial on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI , it wouldn't be supported by the ati property drivers. Don't know wheter there are older drivers available or something to solve this problem (card dates from 2006)
But when giving in the command gksu gedit /etc/modules it doesn't do anything nor does it when typing gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the terminal.
I've looked in the X11 directory and I can't find a file called xorg.conf. So, does this mean that I already am working on the VESA drivers or am I doing something wrong (mind you I'm not an expert in Linux :-)). I've also tried to install the legacy 9.3 drivers, but it says it something about the kernel version and it stops.
How can I eventually switch to the VESA drivers to check whether I'm having driver problems please?
@Kenny: I'm sorry, I must have been tired and seems as if I'm left out some words, this wasn't intentionally :-)
Sorry If my English isn't that good.
Distribution: Slackware (mainly) and then a lot of others...

Hi there,
What we have determined here is this is not a login problem this is some issue with display.
Turning composite off does not resolve the issue so what we are going to do is change the drivers. This will be done from /etc/X11/xorgconfig.
Back up the file and then in the file where you have the driver section type in vga. This is what I think will help. Probabally we would also see if making changes to screen resolution helps. Try this and let us know what happens.
I've changed driver='radeon' to 'vga' and restarted my pc, but now when I should see the login screen, the monitor remains black and switches to standby mode! I cannot login anymore nor going to terminal. Can I solve this? Could I possibly do this by running a live cd?
thx for the answers
update: I found how to get the graphics working again by starting up in safe mode and create a new xorg.config file with this.
guess I'll wait for the professional answers before fiddling around :-)
Do not recommend those drivers for anyone using a modern distribution. catalyst 9.3 is over two years old and requires a distribution at least two years old in order to work. Installing catalyst 9.3 or older on any modern distribution will just break things further.
I changed the rule in my xorg.conf driver="radeon" to driver="vesa", but when i start up I get a message telling me that the graphic card could not be identified and several options to solve the problem (start ubuntu in safe video mode - re-calibrate graph card - view log file ...)(not entirely like this, but my version is in dutch so these are my own translations :-)). I choose to re-calibrate my graph card and to make a new xorg.conf, but then it is again on driver="radeon". So it seems as if I cannot choose the vesa driver, or am I wrong since this is the driver which always works?
Anyway, is there another way to switch to vesa driver?
Sorry for the long delay before responding, but now I've tested my pc by booting an opensuse live disc and it was able to use the vesa drivers. So guess my gfx card isn't damaged?
