Kubuntu 10.04 hangs on checking battery state

I can get to a terminal with it in this state and use a ps aux [pipe] grep acpi and kill processes but how do I get it to resume booting after this? Typing startx doesn't work as xserver is already running on screen zero displaying the never-ending loading screen.

That is not a battery (or acpi) problem because it says "checking battery status.... OK"
It hangs later
Try typing xinit instead startx
Then, if doesn't work I can't help you.
If xinit works try gedit or any similar gtk programm.
I think you'll get a undefined symbol g_malloc_n ... or something about libgdk-x11....
