I'm having trouble with KMail/KDEPIM. I have to re-enter some of my account settings *every* time. This includes "Incomming mail server," "Login" and "Password." If I forget to do this and check my mail, KMail crashes and a reboot is required to be able to load it again. Naturally this implies that I cannot have "check mail on startup" checked.
I appreciate that this isn't specifically Ubuntu related, but I've just switched to Kubuntu from SuSE and I'm still getting used to the differences. Does anyone else have a buggy KMail/KDEPIM install? I've gotten used to KMail being a little buggy over the years but I've never had trouble like I've had on Kubuntu (luckily everything else works very smoothly).
When I first noticed this I removed all of the KDEPIM related files that I could find in ~/.kde but I got the same result after setting up my accounts again.
Do you get any errors when you try to save your settings? I don't run KDE myself, but this sounds it may be more of a bug. You can try running a more updated version of KDE and see if it makes a difference.
I had to give up Kontact/KDE PIM because of bugs. It was working fine in KDE 3.5 but I had to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 due to the old system breaking beyond repair. New motherboard, new operating system. Evidently they are transitioning this application to a new data sharing component (Akonadi). http://pim.kde.org/akonadi/
I couldn't get it to work. I lost all of my contacts/address book entries. I'm using Evolution now, which I hate.
Luckily I had set up my Kmail to use maildir format so all of my emails from Kmail are in separate files. I use the Recoll application to search them and to view the contents.
Now I'm using a spreadsheet for my contacts/address book.

I'm reluctant to upgrade KDE as I'm keen on maintaining stability. If it was just a matter of a single application and a few dependencies I wouldn't be bothered... but the whole of KDE. I reckon I'd be swapping one bug for another (based on previous bad luck). I don't seem to have a problem with the akonadi features; I'm happily using GMail contacts and calendar in Kontact and that bit work great.
As for errors, nothing verbose and I can't see anything in /var/log/messages
I noticed error messages two ways. One way was when a component in the application crashed and put up a window saying that it had crashed. The other method was when I started Kontact by command line. The terminal in which the application was started would show interesting errors.
I'm half tempted to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04 or try to switch to the Trinity fork of KDE 3.5.
