Killing ESD

Ok, first off, what is esd?

Secondly, why does it cause xmms to crash if I don't kill esd first?

Tertiary, how can I remove it from my system? I don't think I use it, since I kill it before starting any games so I can get sound and if I don't kill it before I use xmms it causes a crash.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I think esd is a layer so multiple sound source and play in real time mixing together.

gnome use esd, and ubuntu's esd use libesd0 (oss) but not libesd-alsa0

you may edit /etc/esound/esd.conf

[esd]
auto_spawn=0
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -d default
spawn_wait_ms=100
