I'm a newbie. I have ubuntu 5.04 installed on my laptop. I've chosen english as my system language during the installation. On the keyboard layout screen I wanted ubuntu find my layout so I used "find my layout by pressing some keys" option. It found that it's 'turkish alt-q layout' which is true. but after the installation my keyboard acts as default english keyboard.

*I tried to change it using 'system>preferences>keyboard>layouts'
*I posted this problem on a forum. they advised me to change desktop>>gnome>>peripherals>>keyboard>>kbd
*I also tried 'loadkeys trq'
as you guess none of them worked.

I had the same problem with ubuntu live cd. if I choose Turkish as my system language, my keyboard works properly but if I choose English, I encounter the same problem.

Although I am a newb,

I have a silly answer to this. If you use for example kde, and change kbd layout (you add turkish) -then a little flag on the bottom right corner appears. By clicking on it you change your keyboard layout...it is not very handy but at least you can sweep between 2+languages.

Hope you will stay with Ubuntu

What order are you keyboard layouts listed when you are using the English set up?

(also are they both there on the layouts list when you use Turkish system?)

well both are listed, english & greek with the order mentioned.
Well, I use gnome where I do not have any problems... although i'd prefer kde because of the configuration abilities regarding desktops etc...
