Exclamation Kernel Panic on Maverick

Installed Maverick last night... the system has been working fine all day... then on a reboot tonight got the following.

RAMDISK: gzip image found at block 0
usb 1-2: new high speed usb device using ehci_hcd and address 2
uncompression error
VFS: Cannot open root device "mapper/mylaptop-root" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions
0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr

Then it gives the Kernel Panic

Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper not tainted 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu

Then a call trace...

This is a brand new install of Maverick I copied my files onto a USB and did a fresh install on the whole drive using the alternate CD (the desktop and netbook editions both failed to read on my system)

was previously using Karmic with no issues.

I tried to e2fsck the dev/sda1 from the CD in "repair broken system" mode but the return was "clean" I read that as the file system being intact but this is an area that I have no real knowledge in.

hi, at first glance, it appears that your system is trying to boot from /dev/sr0 (weird). If your / partition is /dev/sda1, try appending (replacing any preexistant "root=" statements) root=/dev/sda1. (in grub, press e to start editing an entry, then press e again to edit the selected line. Thats just to get you booted, I suppose ubuntu has some sort of graphical utility to configure GRUB.

@serafean

Hey thanks for the reply... I got a rather different (and difficult) response on the Ubuntu Forum which made it look easier to reinstall the system (since all my data was backed up) wish I had seen your response first.

BTW Love your signature...

Well, glad you're fixed, but a bit disappointed that we won't know what happened.
And one thing I've learnt using Gentoo : until your partition gets corrupt or the disk dies, the system can be saved without a complete reinstall (from scratch). Sometimes it takes a while, and sometimes you actually do reinstall (read recompile) half the system, but no formatting
Could you also post a link to the ubuntuforum solution? (In case someone stumbles upon this post before the ubuntuforum one, plus I'm interested as to what they said there)

Hey Serafean

tks for the reply... Yes in any normal situation I would never go for the reformat so quickly but I had really zero time invested in this so it wasn't much of an issue... will be different after I work with it for the week...

Interestingly I had initially installed whole partition with VFS... then when I re-installed I just went for the vanilla... not sure if it is just a co-incidence but the system feels rock-solid this time around... last time I had some errors showing up the first couple of boots and it just felt fragile...

The link on the Ubuntu Forum is http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...panic+maverick

There are a new threads with the same problem and at least another 3 or 4 relatively new ones... seems something is a little strange maybe... the advice as you can see is essentially re-install or download and re-install the kernel... usually I don't post there... just here and Linux Forums... I think I will re-adopt that strategy.

Cheers
Greg
