Hi

I tried installing ubuntu-8.04-desktop-amd64 on my Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 DG33 machine.

Im getting this error for other options too - run ubuntu without installing, check CD for defect.

What does this mean ?

Im installing this on a blank 500GB hard-disk. Previously I had tried installing the DVD 64-bit version for which live worked but a full installation failed at 61% due to the corrupt download (original iso file).

Ok, a couple of things:
  • Consider whether your ISO DVD is corrupt
  • Consider that the AMD64 bit version might not be the one you need
  • What kind of hard drive do you have? I presume it's SATA, considering that it's 500GB

Lastly, but probably most importantly, the root partition (8,1), cannot be correct, because that means your kernel is looking for the 1st primary partition on the 8th harddrive! the syntax (8,1) means: (8th HDD, 1st Primary Partition)

Honestly sounds like a corrupt download to me..

Its the AMD64 bit version I need - I have a 64-bit processor with a blank 500GB SATA hard-disk.

I downloaded Fedora Core 9 x86_64 bit version and similar issue.

Does this mean it the kernel is looking for the 16th primary partition on the 202nd harddrive ?

Ok, in my experience, both Intel and AMD dual core chips sometimes run better with the i386 (32bit) version of ubuntu. I still maintain you should give that a try!

I have a similar problem with an 80GB hard drive but the CD works on other machines with no problem. I got the CD from Ubuntu diectly - not a downloaded version. Is there a work around for this?

Possible Solution
 
Hey guys, I'm new to ubuntu, so I claim no expertise, but I think I may have solved a similar problem to the one you are having.

I was trying to solve a problem with install and found a relevant thread on ubuntuforums.

I followed some suggestions, switched my SATA mode to RAID from IDE, then did what tofuconfetti suggested and used the install command line and used the 'irqpoll' switch.

From that point, I hit the 'Kernel panic - not syncing...unable to mount' error you guys seem to be having.

I went back and switched my SATA mode back to 'IDE' and it worked like a charm!

I am happy to say I am looking at 8.04 LTS desktop right now!

Anyway, thought I'd share. I know very little about ubuntu, but perhaps this points to an issue with your drive configuration?

I have 1.172.090 Kernal Panic-not syncing : VFS: unable tomount root fs on unknown-block (0,0).
Ubuntu 9.10 is on an AMD processor with a 200 GB IDE hard drive. I then boot in recovery mode, go to command line login and then reboot. After this every time the computer will start normally. If I reboot, it will reboot, but once turned off it goes through this process again. Thanks for any help. I saw the part about the corrupted download. How do I make sure it is not corrupt when I down load it? Thanks for any help.

You can make sure that it's not corrupted by using an md5, or sha1 sum.
