Kbuntu 9.10 'tartan'-cross hatch graphics issue

Hi

Just downloaded and installed Kbuntu 9.10 onto my old PC.
It stalled at 47% copying files so I restarted and then it installed fine. (I don't know if this is relevant)

The desktop comes up ok but all the title bars of open windows and the menu bar along the bottom of the screen are corrupted. The best way I can describe it is as a tartan or cross hatch effect.

The last time I had anything like this was on my old compaq laptop and this was a X config issue I think (Suse 9).

Can anyone help?

My PC is a Athlon XP with a ATI Radion 64m grahpics card.

thanks

gave up, installed PCLinuxOS 2009.2 instead. Worked first time no issues at all.
