K7 kernel / Kubuntu and a GeForce 6600 GT driver probs

I just installed the 2.6.12-10-k7 kernel in Kubuntu using Synaptic. When i try to apt-get or use synaptic to get the Nvidia drivers for my card, i get chucked back into the command line or when it works successfully and Xconf has been altered to 'nvidia' over 'nv' i get tiny fonts in KDE and no GLX.
I have 'Load "glx"' in my Xorg.conf file and have apt-get nvidia drivers and tried compiling them fromt he drivers from the website several times.
Also tried restricted modules too.
Anyone out there know what to do? It works fine if i use the ~386 kernel, but that's crap as i have a athlon xp

Everytime I install a new kernel. Uninstalling and reinstalling the nvidia drivers works. Never had to change the X config at all to receive the Nvidia splash screen.

Not sure if this will help you but it has worked for me in the past.

How to install Graphics Driver (NVIDIA)
Read #General Notes
Read #How to add extra repositories

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/NVIDIA-Settings.desktop

Insert the following lines into the new file
[Desktop Entry]
Name=NVIDIA Settings
Comment=NVIDIA Settings
Exec=nvidia-settings
Icon=
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;System;
Save the edited file
Read #How to restart GNOME without rebooting computer
Applications -> System Tools -> NVIDIA Settings
