(k)Ubuntu checking Internet connection

Hi,

For the last week my Internet connection hasn't been 100% live. I'd like to be able to trouble shoot the problem and was hoping for some advice on what to look for and how to re-establish my connection as soon as possible.

The only thing I really know is to try pinging some web sites, but this doesn't locate the issue for me.

I've also read something about a daemon: ifplugd is used on Laptops for connections. I'm using a desktop, but I wonder if this is something I can use and how do I use it?

Thanks,

Merlyn
PS. I'm running Dapper

Broadband. I've got an asdl modem and I'm connecting via a network cable.

(Sorry for forgetting that!)
