[SOLVED] Issue with Notebook with Ubuntu 12.04: processor hangs regularly up.. what to do?

Hello,
with the latest upgrade for Ubuntu 12.04, the processor hangs up (not before). See the attachment.
So, what has to be done?
a) go back to an older kernel? (which one and how)
b) do anything else? (a proofed measure.. nothing like "upgrade and let see if it is ok..".. because it is my wife notebook and this is life threatening if I do something wrong... ;-)

Can it still boot to the older kernel? Or did you wipe that out? I'd say go back and leave well enough alone. Find a distro that would work via live CD and determine if the wife likes the distro.

My rule of thumb is if you don't need an upgrade, then don't do it; even then, be very cautious about doing any upgrades.

And all those distros in your signature? ... seems like you have some experience at installing. So I'm wondering/guessing whether this was you not leaving well enough alone (that is the likely life threatening issue), or if there was a true need and so you took it on. In either case, protective measures should have been taken to save data, but just thinking that if this was a necessity for some reason, then the user would've been in the loop and at least prepared for a period of instability. If it was a case of not leaving well enough alone ... lesson learned; I've been there too.

It was a mistake to have done the upgrade. It comes up with ubuntu.. "do the upgrade".. and for the reason I am curious.. especially the week end or when all are sleeping.. I do it.. despite few personal experience 20 years ago in IT area like "better with next upgrade to avoid issues?.. = you get 20 new bugs".. lets wait a bit before I make any change to that life threatening notebook.. it hangs up after few time especially with firefix use (approx 1 time per day).
How to go back to the older kernel?

I'm thinking it should be in your grub menu, but that depends whether or not you obliterated the old kernel or not.

you still have the old kernel there just use it. press esc and then select the other kernel never did understand why ubuntu has a default time of 5 seconds.
seems your new kernel did not build the driver correct.

In my last Update check, an update for fglrx was suggested. I said "OK lets do it". The notebook is booted since 6hrs and NO hang ups (despite extensive use like internet, teamviewer between france and germany..). It looks much better. Lets wait a bit more before I reinstall an older kernel.

Xorg log file where we could see fglrx impact.
still issues which can be seen in dmesg output but no hang ups

I close that thread.
fglrx under ubuntu 12.04 was the faulty module creating the hang ups of the notebook.
Since I updated it, there was nomore an hang up (still regular kernel issues we can see in dmesg; see attachment).
Hopefully fglrx will be upgraded and improved the next months.
