I want the laptop and desktop to hold the same content...basically a copy of each other. Is there an easy way to do that in Ubuntu? (I did read the Find Similar Threads) Thanks in advance.
When you refer to 'content', what do you mean exactly? All your documents, pictures and so on? Or also installed software, settings (non unique ones)? Anything else? The more specific information you provide, the better we can answer your question.

As far as syncing, you can use a tool such as rsync. But basically a copy of each other? If you are talking about all the time, why not host all of your files on the desktop as your server?
For whatever it's worth, I suggest you do what I do: get rid of the desktop altogether. Plug an external keyboard and external monitor to the notebook when you're "at home" (or where you use the desktop), and that's it. Just make sure you keep current backups of everything you have in the notebook, including OS, system files, everything. I use rsync for that.
You can also use rsync to keep the two machines in sync, but I think that is annoying, it soon becomes an unwelcome task, next you are inclined to skip syncing tasks, then eventually something will be lost/deleted... I decided that keeping just one machine is more realistic in terms of human behavior.
I have several PC's ranging from a Netwalker, netbook up to a (few) desktops at home & work. I initially just used rsync, then an online backup called rsync.net. It seems to me the best solution currently is to use Dropbox.com.
Use soft links to the particular files you want to synchronize between the computers. (From the tips & tricks: ln -s /path/to/folder/that/you/want/to/sync/ ~/Dropbox/folder/name). Ubuntuone would be another option except that I needed to access to some files with instances of virtual Windows.
