Is anyone using Ubuntu 64?
If so,then I have a few questions,if you dont mind.Does it take advantage of the additional abilities of the 64 bit processor,or not?Does it use the Pure 64 strain,or the 32 bit repositories,or a mix of both?I just got an AMD 64 based computer and am looking for a 64 bit based OS,any other suggestions besides Ubuntu? Thanks in advance.:)

As far as I know it uses pure 64-bit software except for firefox(anybody go a definite on this?) and openoffice. Openoffice in 64-bit mode won't compile on AMD64 because of 32-bit Java issues.
If you know linux decently well, go Gentoo, optimized for your system(althought the ubuntu devs do a good job of that too). |
I had installed ver 5.10 of Kubuntu 64 bit.
It had both 64 and 32 bit libraries. You could run 32 bit stuff there also. I had some problems with it ( dont remember them now :/ ) so i installed 32 bit ver :) If You have time then install it. Check if Your favourite software will work. If yes, stick to 64 bit :) |
As long as I can run java and flash in firefox, then I will definatly use it.Thanks for the advice.
