How does the laptop connect to the internet? (Is the "router" the PC that connects to the internet or is is a hardware router/switch/modem combination?)
How do you switch between windows and ubuntu - presumably you reboot?
At the mo, it sounds like the router has already assigned an internal IP to your laptop. When you switch OS's, however, your laptop "forgets" what this is. If you are connecting DHCP then this cannot be recovered. You can work around by unplugging your laptop from the network before switching the OS over, then plugging back in again. Activate the connection as normal to initiate a new DHCP session.
For that matter - in ubuntu, it may work to use the network connections dialog to diable then enable the connection.
All this is assuming the internet connection is via a hardware router/switch/modem combo.
