Internet connection slow
 

I've only recently installed Ubuntu. So far, I think it is really very good. However, the Internet connection does seem very slow, slower than it was on an old Toshiba Satellite Pro running Windows 98 using the same modem ( a Zoom eternal serial 56k modem).

Any suggestions please.

Also, is the only place where you can connect System > Administration > Networking ?

(....and the modem is not listed in the hardware listing, which seems rather odd).

I had the same problem...I disabled the System > Administration > Networking setup, and then ran "sudo pppconfig" on the command line and followed the instructions...great improvement in speed...this may fix your problem as well...I start/kill the dialup connection now with "pon" and "poff" commands...
