CPU freezes a problem with CPUfreq, PowerNowd

EDIT: I found out that when my computer switches the CPU frequency from 1.2GHz back down to 798MHz it causes my computer to pause for a second. However, now that I know the problem, I don't know how to configure either CPUfreq nor PowerNowd. If someone could help me out with this new problem that would be great.

Hello everyone,

I am using a Dell Latitude c610 laptop computer running at 1.2GHZ with 512 megs of RAM. I recently installed Ubuntu 5.10 over my previous installation of Windows XP. I am fairly new to the whole Linux idea and I was immediately impressed how easy it was to configure Ubuntu to work on my laptop. However, it is not quite perfect.

The one problem I've encountered with this install is that every once in a while my mouse cursor freezes for about a second, then jumps to where it should be. At first this was just a small annoyance that I thought I could handle until I realized that it affects more than just the mouse cursor. When I'm typing, the pauses work the same way. My typing won't register for the duration of the pause but will catch up when the pause is finished a second later. When I'm listening to music (whether through the CD Player or XMMS), the pauses cause my music to skip twice then pause. As to the frequency of the pauses, they are not an evenly spaced out event. It seems they become more frequent if I'm managing several windows at once.

Also, before I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my computer, I tried Kubuntu 5.04 and I experienced the same thing. However, on the Kubuntu install I was unable to get my D-Link DWL-650 wireless network adapter to work and I didn't use the internet at all, so I doubt the problem lies in the network adapter.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me out with this problem. I really like Ubuntu, but this annoyance is almost enough to make me switch back to Windows.

Thanks.

I know its pretty old by now, and that there are quite a few other options to "fix" (or work around) this issue, but I just disabled Speedstep in my system bios. - Quick and painless (so far..)
