Intermittent loss of wireless connectivity: failed to read scan data

Hi

I'm running Hardy on a Dell D630. Periodically my wireless connection simply dies for no reason whatsoever. Then I get the fabled message "failed to read scan data. resource temporarily unavailable". The network I'm using is fine, I can always get a wired connection when this happens. Almost always if I reboot everything works again, at least for a while, but today I had to reboot a second time. And then the connection died again. Sometimes I can go for weeks without this problem. Other days, it recurs multiple times a day. Suggestions would be most appreciated.

re: Intermittant loss of wireless connectivity

I have the same problem on my Gateway T-6330 running Ubuntu 9.04. One thing that helped was to change the encryption on my router from WPA2 to WPA. It's not perfect but it does work a bit better. The connection drops less often.

I have no problems whatsoever on unencrypted wireless networks and I haven't tried WEP.

I'd suspect RF interference.

Things to consider: Mobile phone next to your PC / router, the neighbour's microwave oven etc.

A parabolic aerial / antenna may help focus your signal, they're easy to make from household items (eg aluminium foil, cardboard, wire mesh etc. See here: http://www.freeantennas.com/
