Well, I am new to linux and Ubuntu. I am trying to install Ubuntu on my old intel P3 733Mhz pc. Anyway, I downloaded Ubuntu from the Ubuntu website (I believe it's Ubuntu 6.10) and burned it onto a blank cd. I booted it on my old pc, and when the menu pops up i click install and it tells me that I need to install it on an amd computer. I don't see how that would be relevent. Anyway, if I need to download a different version could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks everyone,

I downloaded Xubuntu 6.10 othe other day, and for the first time, an iso didn't burn properly on my DVDR. I ended up downloading the same file again, and reburning, and it worked fine..
My First guess, is did you download the i386 version, or did you download the 64bit version? Thats the only thing I can figure you did. I've never gotten that error, and I've installed Ubuntu on several different machines. 6.10 is the current release of Ubuntu, so I would stick with it, Don't bother downloading anything older than 6.06, and certainly since you're a newbie, don't download anything newer than 6.10. The only other thing, if you're sure you downloaded the i386 version, you may want to download the "Alternate Install CD", and see if that helps. Also, some report problems burning to CDRW/DVDRW.. so make sure you use CDR/DVDR. I'm not sure how valid those reports are, but there are enough of them that make me pay attention. I've rarely had problems using DVD-Rs.
A PC that old, you need to download the i386 version. I'm not sure how the Desktops of Ubuntu/Kubuntu (GNome and KDE respectively) will perform on a processor that old, you might be better served by Xubuntu. The desktop (Xfce) is a little lighter than KDE or Gnome, and might help with speed in an old system like that, while still maintaining complete functionality with Ubuntu. Only thing that changes is what you *see*, under the hood, its pretty much the same.
Get Xubuntu (site is the same as the Ubuntu/Kubuntu site, so its just to give you an idea of what you need to D/L) http://www.xubuntu.org/get
Edit, Found these links while poking around on Xubuntu's site, thought you might like them. I imagine there are probably similar links on Ubuntu/Kubuntu's website. http://www.doink.ch/xubuntu-doc/xubu...uick-tour.html
Um, I'm not sure exactly what the i386 version is. I'm pretty sure that is the problem though, the message said that I should download the i386 version, but I don't know where to download. Anyway, is Xubuntu any different from Ubuntu? Because I was set on using Ubuntu.
edit: I just browsed through the download section on the ubuntu site and found the i386 version. I just have to download it and see what happens from there. Thanks for your help though.

Reference my post after I edited it.. Looks like I was editing it while you posted.
Ubuntu/Xubuntu are pretty simlar cosmetically. KDE has more of a Windows feel. You won't notice much of a difference in the 3 of them. The main advantage of Xubuntu over the other two, is the desktop environment, is quite a bit lighter, and thus should breathe a little life into your older hardware.
Personally, I have a slight preference Ubuntu(Gnome) over Xubuntu(Xfce), but my PC is 2.4ghz with 1gig of RAM. I just got an old 1.0ghz Laptop on the very cheap, and plan to install Xubuntu on it(Gonna do some experimenting with Wireless).
Frankly, I'd rather be beaten down with a baseball bat and my face stomped on with Golf cleats than use KDE. Ok, maybe not, , but I absolutely hate KDE.
