installing ubuntu

I am a linux newbie. I downloaded ubuntu 5.10 and tried installing it on an extra HD. This may seem silly, but I can't get anything to happen. I have tried booting from the cd-rom, installing after loading a boot disk (cd-rom drivers), and tried opening through windows, and still no dice. I may just be overlooking the obvious, but any help would be appreciated. I have no linux experience so please take it easy with the techno jargin.

How did you burn the CD? Did you burn the .iso as a data cd? If so you need to Burn the image.
