Installing legacy NVIDIA drivers 7.10
 

I have installed the nvidia-glx-legacy drivers through the Restricted Drivers tool in Ubuntu 7.10 for my Vanta LT graphics card. I attempted to execute the command "nvidia-settings" to alter my screen resolution, but received a message that this command was being referenced by another package, but was not present and needed to be installed. So, I attempted to install this package via the command:
but was informed that the nvidia-glx-legacy package would need to be uninstalled. I don't understand why nvidia-settings, which I have used many times before, would either not be included with the legacy NVIDIA drivers obtained through the Restricted Drivers, or why I would have to uninstall the driver itself just to install this feature. Through Preferences > Screen Resolution, I am only afforded 1024x768 at either 60 Hz or 87 Hz, and would like to change this to 75 Hz, of which I know this monitor is capable of. I am not very proficient in editing the xorg.conf file for screen resolutions, and utilize the nvidia-settings utility for my other machines. If someone knows how I could achieve a resolution of 1024x768 @ 75 Hz by editing the xorg.conf file, w/o the necessity to go through the xorgconfig process, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

By the way, the monitor is a Compaq M540, and again is capable of the desired resolution, as I have used it in Windows 2000 (which is what was installed prior to the Ubuntu "upgrade").
