You probably need to install the mcs-devel files. Use Synaptic and do a search for mcs and install the mcs development package.

Question re

when I tried installing mcs-devel, it didnt work. So I tried installing mono-devel. It worked. But got another error message on ./configure. It is given below. Please help.

Code:
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p
checking for gawk... no
checking for mawk... mawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for mcs... /usr/bin/mcs
checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes
checking for MONO_CAIRO... configure: error: Package requirements (mono-cairo) were not met:

No package 'mono-cairo' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables MONO_CAIRO_CFLAGS
and MONO_CAIRO_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.
