Hi, I installed ubuntu 8.10 on my other PC but when i restart the computer after installation WindowsXP starts instead of grub. I thought it must be installed on the linux partition and set it to active but booting fails with no operating system error. I tried installing grub manually but when i use root(hd0,0) it tells me no such disk exists. Please help.

Please I need to know is anyone else facing this problem? One more thing the ubuntu is installed and there seems to be no problem with it. Its grub's problem.Please help me guys

You need to give us more info, just saying hd0,0 didn't work, isn't gonna really help anyone help you.

How exactly is your system setup? I'm assuming if hd0,0 isn't right, then you have two drives. If hd0,0 isn't right, then its probably another partition or drive you need to setup.

If you can boot the Live disk, open a terminal and type "sudo fdisk -l" no quotes, and thats a lowercase L, and post the results.

Installed Ubuntu 8.10 in a seperate partition using jfs and moint point /. Machine has XP pro on same hard drive. After Ubuntu install, nothing boots. Reports grub error 5, but I can not find any problem with the partition table. Machine is also configured with RAID Level 1 mirroring, don't know if the RAID is an issue or not with this no boot problem. What to do?

ok i know that hd0,0 isn't the only possible partition i did try from hd0,0, hd0,1, ........ upto hd5,5 or (somthing like that).. lol just kidding...but i checked out every thing before posting i have two hard disks and the ubuntu partition is (hd1,1) but after that i tried every other partition but no use.
In short nothing works. it has nothing to do with my hardware because i know it should work because I can boot into the live cd and everything including the desktop effects works perfectly. Its not ubuntu, it is just that the grub wont install. I even checked tha partition and everything seems to be in place but i have no way of checking it out since it wont boot.

In your first post you say "when i restart the computer after installation WindowsXP starts instead of grub", does this mean you restart after installation of Ubuntu, or after installation of Ubuntu and then installing xp?

You also said you though "it" must be installed on the linux partition? what is it? Grub? If you installed it on the partition it won't work, you need to install part of Grub to the master boot record or else have an entry for Ubuntu in your xp boot.ini file.

What did you set to "active"? Linux doesn't need to be on an active paratition to boot.

How did you use "root (hd0,0)??

Boot up the Ubuntu Live CD and run the command suggested by IndyGunFreak and post output here. The link posted by Duck2006 is about as comprehensive a site as you can find regarding Grub/Ubuntu.
