Question Installed Ubuntu 11.04 on IBM Thinkpad T43 with no GUI

Hello all,
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on IBM Thinkpad T43 but I have no GUI. Everytime when I boot the system it goes directly to command line interface. Is it because the driver issue or the laptop is to old? The run level stays always in N 2. Thank you all.

Hello,

Can you verify for us the run level? Also, have you tried starting X server and seeing what errors and/or warnings that you get? That would be the easiest way in seeing what is going wrong when your GUI starts up.

Cheers,

Josh

Hello and thank you for your feedback. When typ startx at the command prompt, the program says startx is currently not installed. You can installed it by typing apt-get install xinit. Do I have to install this from the media or the Internet. The reason I am asking because it seems that I don't get ip address either. I tried both static or dhcp but no success for wired Ethernet. I have another Linux box Centos with no difficulties getting IP address. Thank you

Hi,
Well. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 Server 32bit from here; http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server/download. The image cd gave me options to install Ubuntu Server or Ubuntu Enterprize Cloud Server. I went ahead and installed the Server. That's all. The downloaded image was only 621MB. I found another download which is 3.7G here; http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso...11.04/release/. I have started to download this one; ubuntu-11.04-dvd-i386.iso. maybe this gives more options for install.

Can I ask why you installed Ubuntu Server on a thinkpad? Do you know what Ubuntu Server is? It doesn't come with a GUI. What are your goals with your computer? What all do you want to do?

I am a Semi Linux guy mostly GUI friendly. I am trying to install Zabbix software on it which they recommend Ubuntu. The reason I installed it on the Thinkpad because I don't have any other Destop PC and the thinkpad is all I have.

Well why did you get the server version then? If you really want to use the server edition so bad, you can run the following at the command line:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
I do, however, highly recommend that if you have no actual use for a server, especially being on a laptop, that you install just the standard Ubuntu distro.

Cheers,

Josh
