install kubuntu 8.10 with lilo rather than grub (because of grub error 18)

I've just tried to install kubuntu 8.10 but my machine won't boot now, stopping on grub error 18. Is there a way to fix the install by installing lilo ? I've never had problems booting with lilo whereas grub always gives me grief (large hdd on old computer and bios = grub issues)

I've rebooted using the livecd but the installer doesn't provide the option to choose the boot loader. I am downloading the systemrescuecd as I type but was wondering if there wasn't a built-in solution in kubuntu.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Have a look here --> http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/GRUB#Error_18

It would be easier to fix the bug you created, than to confuse the issue with lilo.

what h/w are you using?

update bios or make a special /boot partition.

check bios settings first

Thanks for the pointer (already been there) and the suggestion but lilo was simpler.

I've booted kubuntu successfully using lilo that I configured using the system rescue cd. Now is there a way to configure lilo for kubuntu or should I just go about doing a permanent lilo.conf manually ?

Thanks all

Probably faster to edit the file by hand. Here is a link showing what goes in Lilo.

Ok done :-) and finally, is there a good all round graphical configuration tool in kubuntu ? I can do command line and vi but I am keen to avoid.

It has been a while since I used buntu, last one I used was Xubuntu. There are some graphical tools. I got fed up with the sudo stuff. I enabled a root log in, and that helped a lot.

Sorry, I'm not up to date on Kubuntu....

Kubuntu is full of graphical tools. For changing config files, kate is a fine editor.
