randell,

hi - i really don't think you want to be messing with the kernel if this is your 'main' computer.. if you want to experiment, buy an old machine off eBay purely for messing with. that's what i do - if i break something, it doesn't matter.... compiling kernels is fairly straightforward, but there are plenty of 'gotchas' and you might find it all a bit too much to begin with.

as for speed issues.. well, i tried suse 10.1 a few weeks back (on my 'scratch' machine) and it looks like it pre-loads a number of applications into memory upon boot, much the same as windows does. so start-up times for firefox, openoffice, etc were very impressive.. ubuntu doesn't do that, so starting firefox from cold, for instance, will take some time. i still far prefer ubuntu overall to suse, but i was quite impressed with suse's performance.

THANKS! Yeah I have an old box that I use to test different distro's.

I actually went out and BOUGHT Suse 9.3 a while back and I will say that the Graphics are Beautiful but she is way too slow for my taste, and took up WAY too much space! (5 fricken cd's!)

I'm going to leave the kernel to the pros and wait for them to send it to me. (although I might just try compiling on my old box)

Thanks again!

if u install a new kernel and something dosent work out right..u can always revert to a older revision ( make sure your grub.conf is saved prior to new kernel install)
