Talking If I can deal with 'kernel panic - not syncing VFS: unable to mount root FS ...'

Hi
I've just started using Linux Ubuntu. I had a frightening error message, I don't know why. But after browsing some replies to something similar on this site, I simply opened a previous session and found that all worked fine and I hadn't even lost any of my downloads and adaptations. ś Yes I've still got my third level key and everything. Thanks

Wink I thought you'd all tell me I'd done it all wrong

....so did you have a question?
Can you not comment on a statement? Isn't what I did a temporary solution? I don't know what caused it or how to find out. I've been trying to use terminal screens, but I honestly don't know what I'm doing. I'd like to know, at the very least, how to put the session or kernel I need at the top of the list where it flashes.

If you want to use other languages you need to use a key to get the extra characters. In Ubuntu you can determine which key it is: in my case it's Alt Gr. I worked that out in the session before it wouldn't load. I'd like to add something. As it loads the sign on screen the message is 'no WUbuilder'. Is this normal?

If you have "just started using Linux Ubuntu ...", you need to start with the basics. Here are 2 excellent sites for getting started with Ubuntu:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/
http://members.iinet.net/~herman546/index.html
And learning basic linux terminal commands is most important for using any linux distro.
Here are 2 excellent sites for learning basic linux commands:

http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/cli.html

As for the specific error you received, this is most likely an error in your grub2 (Ubuntu's boot loader) configuration that boots Ubuntu.
Have you made any alterations to the default grub2 configuration files?
Try opening a terminal (applications > accessories > terminal) and run:
Code:
sudo update-grub
If that reports errors, please post them here.

And welcome to linux! And welcome to the LQ forums!!
