Welcome. I hope we can help. We also understand that you may have to translate from one language to another.
First, do you have vi or vim installed?
Do you have /var subfolder?

Interesting. Using the an updated U12.10 daily build, there's no /var/log/messages file:
Code:
/var/log$ ls
alternatives.log cups jockey.log syslog
alternatives.log.1 dist-upgrade jockey.log.1 syslog.1
apport.log dmesg kern.log udev
apport.log.1 dmesg.0 kern.log.1 ufw.log
apt dmesg.1.gz lastlog unattended-upgrades
auth.log dmesg.2.gz lightdm upstart
auth.log.1 dpkg.log mail.err wtmp
boot dpkg.log.1 mail.log wtmp.1
boot.log faillog news Xorg.0.log
bootstrap.log fontconfig.log pm-powersave.log Xorg.0.log.old
btmp fsck pm-powersave.log.1
btmp.1 hp samba
ConsoleKit installer speech-dispatcher

Hi,
did you check the contents of /var/log/syslog?
