Really does not matter what type of file you deleted. More important is the type of filesystem you are using, and how long ago the file was deleted (by extension, how much disk activity has occurred since the deletion).

There are a number of deleted file recovery tools floating around, and Google is probably your best bet until someone posts what they have found to be a good recovery tool for the filesystem you are using.

I have had good success using "recover 1.3" on my EXT2 filesystems, but it is a command-line based tool, no longer maintained, and it recovers LOADS of files from which you need to sort out the file(s) you actually want to recover, and discard the rest.
If it sounds useful to you, I can send you the source package (I don't think it can be found online any longer).

Use photorec, it has an option to search for specific types. You'll need to look closely to find, it though.

thanks, all.

first, you have to enable the universe repositories.

"sudo apt-get install testdisk"

also installs photorec.

"sudo photorec"

will now run photorec and it does give quite a few search options.

i ran this from a live cd.

unfortunately, i probably over wrote some of the zip file, so it wasn't recoverable.

thanks for the help - i learned something.
