set up kmail for accessing your gmail account

Here's how I did it for my kmail/gmail useage. Worked like a charm, when I was using kmail. I've recently gone the opposite route from you and am now using Thunderbird/gmail. Anyway I'd previously made up a howto for myself, so I'll just copy it here and substitute "username" and "password" where applicable. I was using bogofilter and clamav as well, so just ignore that bit if you're not using those programs. Also at the end you'll find a mini-howto to change the appearance of your kmail forwarding screen, so that the cursor, where you enter text is at the top of the screen like it is in most email programs, instead of at the bottom of the screen. Ignore that also if you're happy with having the quoted text show up ahead of your forwarding reply. This same method can be used to fix up the Reply screen. On to your immediate problem: First thing is to open up kmail to its opening screen. Kmail will open up in window.
click settings-configure Kmail-add-ok(pop3)-acct name -> Gmail
login -> "username"@gmail.com
password -> "password"
host -> pop.gmail.com
port -> 995
enable “store pop password”
enable “enable interval mail checking”
make destination folder Gmail (must make this actual folder under Local Folders as well. And
later on will need to make Spam, Spam Archive and Virus Suspect folders, before setting up the
bogofilter and clamav plugins.) If the Gmail folder isn't made before making the gmail account
here, then I'll have to acept “inbox” - apply – OK , then after all is done, go back in and change
the default gmail inbox to Gmail.
accept basic kwallet setup, but don't enable it. In the next window accept the regular storage of password in the config file. Will then exit setup.
If not done prior, make the Gmail inbox folder under Local folders. Then click settings- configure kmail-highlight Gmail and click modify. Click on destination folder-Gmail-OK.
click on extras tab and set encryption to SSL and leave authentication as Clear Text – OK.
click Sending tab – add – OK(smtp)
name -> Gmail
host -> smtp.gmail.com
port -> 465
enable Server Requires Authentication
login -> "username"@gmail.com
password -> "password"
enable Store smtp Password
click on Security tab
enable SSL
enable Plain -OK-Apply-Store Password-OK
Set up Kmail forwarding and replying features to position cursor above the quoted text and not after the quoted text as is the default situation. Do this as follows:
By default the cursor for entering text, when forwarding a message, will be at the bottom of the quoted text. To make room at the top and have the cursor appear at the top after entering the addressees, click <settings> <configure Kmail> <templates> and after the first (REM'd) line, click <enter>, then at bottom click <insert command>. Highlight <miscellaneous> to get its submenu and click <set cursor position> then <enter> <apply> <ok>. Follow a similar procedure modifying as necessary to set up the Reply feature.
A short note here about the gmail end of the deal. There are settings to change in gmail, in order that gmail will allow you to access your gmail mail from kmail (or another email program). If you haven't already done this and cannot figure out how to do this part, repost and I'll send you that bit. But if you've got that bit sorted out, this little howto will almost assuredly solve your problem. Cheers, Thane
