Huawei E220 USB Modem
 

Good evening

I have just purchased a 2TB hard drive which I partitioned using Windows 7. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 in one of the partitions. My problem is that my Huawei E220 USB modem will not connect. I have set it up exactly as it is currently in my Ubuntu 10.04 installation which is on my 500GB hard drive.

Whenever I connect the modem I get two error popups. The first one displays a list of what I presume are errors. The second popup advises that there is a problem with the modemmanager.

Does anyone have an idea what I must do to resolve this. If I enter lsusb in a terminal the modem is shown in the list. I have attached a number of screenshots and text files.

Until last year I had a Huawei 220 too - without any problem in several distributions.
Normally
- l like list
is recognizing the modem.

As I see now, the modem is recognized.
Maybe you' ll find a hint running in a Terminal
or similar

My E220 works fine in 9.04 and 10.04. Just will not work in 12.04. I have done a search for error 'modem-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_utf8_validate()' in Google and I see that this has been reported a number of times in Launchpad. Someone has closed all of them and inserted a note referring to bug #952941. I have tried to retrieve it to see if there is a solution, but the response is that the bug does not exist. Have not found a web page with the solution.

When I try and retrieve this bug report I get an error response saying that the bug report does not exist. I wanted to see if there was a solution to this error. I have not been able to find one.

Sorry that I can't give you further help.
Since 1 year I have a router to connect - with little problems.
3 years before I had several USB modems - with Huawei in more than half a dozen distributions no problem - except Ubuntu (that' s why I left Ubuntu and went to Mint).

I would try another distribution, if you don't want to use Gnome3, Linux Mint 13 (LTS - 5 yaers like Ubuntu, based on Ubuntu) is a good choice (alternative Desktops: Mate, Cinnamon,...).
I' ve installed Mate - it works without a problem (but I did not try an USB modem).

I am planning to have a good look at Linux Mint 12. I recently purchased a 2TB hard drive and installed Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Linux Mint 12 on it. It was not the best idea I have had lately because all the flavours of Ubuntu had the same name in Grub. I had a brief look at Linux Mint with Mate and MGCSE. I was extremely impressed. The only thing I could not do was add a launcher to the desktop. I asked on their forums and received an answer. The screenshots of Cinnamon look good.

I have since deleated all of them and reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04. I am planning to reinstall Linux Mint 12. I will see if I can install my modem. I like the attitude of the Linux Mint development team unlike the Unity/Canonical team. I am planning to install Cinnamon to see what it can do. Lately I have seriously been thinking of moving from Ubuntu to Linux Mint because firstly I do not like they way Ubuntu is moving, and secondly their sometimes neurotic obsession with preventing their users from working using the root account.

Same problem here, I gave up trying and purchased another modem, same Huawei but E300, it works out of the box.
