The Ubuntu Guide for Breezy is now at http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu

The squarecows one, mentioned a couple of posts back, was quickly abandoned in October and never got off the ground.

The advantage of the easylinux.info one over other successors to ubuntuguide.org are:
1) already available in English, Latvian, Polish, Chinese and Russian.
2) Is updated daily.
3) ANYONE can contribute. Yes, anyone. The big drawback of Chua's guide was only he could update it. Now, anyone can. So, a community is quickly building around it and updates go in daily.

It's actually better than Chua's guide ever was but it still follows his great command-driven approach.

Stop by and help out.

Ubuntu created their own FAQ which has the newest info compatible with Breezy

It's a decent guide and has some really great ideas, except that it favors synaptic

So---what's wrong with Synaptic?? I'm not aware of how to (easily) use a different Package Manager in Ubuntu.

Personally I found that it wanted to install realplayer 8 ... then choked, and the totem-xine install didn't seem to include the xine-check script. (OTOH: this is the only totem install I've seen where it playes DVDs without that mysterious "no URL handler" error)

So it isn't really out of beta yet, but I think it is a worthy project and could use support.

The advantage of commandline apt-get/aptitude over synaptic is that you can directly grab whatever you fancy right away. It is direct and unambiguous - nothing hidden. The trouble is, you really need to know what the package is called (and that it is available at all) before you start.

The advantage of synaptic is when you are not sure what you need or where to get it, you can just look through the packages for likely candidates and read the info about them. Also helps when helping others install software/drivers et al- you can find a package (using synaptics search functions) and tell them the command to install it.

One can also dynamically modify repositories and so on.
i.e. all those things gui's are good at.

For a troubleshooting/howto guide, I prefer to issue cli commands to describing through gui mouse-clicks. It's more efficient.

I may have found a flaw in the easylinux ubuntu wiki though - I'd like to verify before submitting an alteration: in the instructions for installing nvidia drivers, the first step is to install (via apt) the package "nvidia-glx". The second step (install nvidia-settings) actually removes nvidia-settings! (Perhaps the packages have changed since the entry was written?) - anyway, my geforce 6600 works so much better without step 2.

About "EasyUbuntu":
I have now tried it and it seemed to break myriad things... I could probably do better with a bash script. I warn "caution" using it. Though it is a good idea - I suspect it simply hasn't kept up with package changes.

In there is all sorts of useful guides to using ubuntu, and I am a senior admin of it. We now have a Guide for Dapper Drake. This guide is very comprehensive.

Speaking of Ubuntu. I wish, Oh i wish they would release a DVD that contains BOTH Ubuntu & Kubuntu files. There is use for both. It is a pain in the butt to load Ubuntu, then go thru and load the KDE files you also want. It is really just one great distro

These documentation projects are good but they do contain a lot of Ubuntu (Gnome) realted tips and how-tos. What are the Kubuntu equivilants?
