Use partition magic to resize your partition, leave the rest to ubuntu

What do you have? Do you have a Linux distro?
If you have Mepis or Knoppix, you can use QTParted.
If you have Mandriva, you can use DiskDrake.

Have all of those

Use DiskDrake to partition and resize existing partitions. Then, install Ubuntu on the EXT3 partition(s).
