How to set up an extended desktop on dual monitors in Kubuntu 9.04?

I'm using my laptop (Thinkpad T60) and I have a secondary monitor (with a different resolution than my laptop screen) connected by VGA. Kubuntu recognizes the monitor and it functions but my desktop is mirrored across the dual monitors (which is useless to me). How can I extend my desktop across both monitors?

P.S. I googled it but the solutions I found weren't standard, they were hardware specific and you had to manually change system files, etc.. There must be an easier way.

Unfortunately, different drivers have different methods, and different versions of the same driver have different methods. Given that you haven't told us what GPU you have, or what driver you are using, it's card of hard to tell you which direction to look in.

I'd start by attaching your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a post here or using a service like http://pastebin.com to show it to us. That should have all the information we need.

You need to use xrandr. Debian has a pretty good wiki on xrandr:

http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12

reledi 10-18-2009 03:50 PM

I tried that how-to and also another one I found (http://lilserenity.wordpress.com/200...ement-at-last/), but no luck. When I would restart or logout to see the new settings, the OS would get stuck on a black screen with only the mouse cursor visible. Then I would manually restart the computer and I could only get to the command line login. Thus in both cases I needed to go into the recovery mode to reset the screen settings.

Here is the xrandr info:
Quote:

dennis@DennisT60:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 1280
VGA connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
1024x768 60.0 + 75.0 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 75.0 72.8 75.0 66.7 59.9
720x400 70.1
LVDS connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm
1280x800 60.0*+ 50.0
1024x768 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
720x400 85.0
640x400 85.1
640x350 85.1
TMDS-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
And here is my (unedited) xorg.conf file:
Quote:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
I tried extending to the VGA on the left side of the LVDS. I tried both tutorials. Can anyone suggest something that is being done in those tutorials that isn't being mentioned? Of course I'm not copy pasting the info on those tutorials (because the options are different), but I'm following the instructions.

We really need to see logs or error messages. For example, what happens if you run:

xrandr --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS

I'm guessing that it will give some error about exceeding the maximum possible resolution.

You're correct, and I apologize for not including what error message I got.

This is what I get with my now unedited xorg.conf file:
Quote:

dennis@DennisT60:~$ xrandr --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 1280x1280 (desired size 2304x800)
Which is the same error message I got earlier.

adamk75 10-18-2009 07:04 PM

In the screen section , you need to create a Display SubSection and define the maximum resolution you might use. Something like:

Code:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth    24
SubSection "Display"
    Viewport  0 0
    Depth    24
    Virtual  2304 800
EndSubSection
EndSection

This is covered in that wiki I linked to above, BTW :-)

I initially did add the Virtual line (first inside the subsection as covered in your linked tutorial, and then as a separate line inside the section as covered in the other tutorial).
I just tried it like how you suggested, thus with the Default Depth and Viewport options also added, saved the file, ran the command 'xrandr --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS' and I get the same error.

Please show us your new /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

EDIT: You did restart X after editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, right?

The maximum supported size of the virtual desktop for the Intel 945GM series of chipset with 3D acceleration enabled, is 2048×2048. The virtual screen can be larger but DRI will be disabled so no Compiz or Google Earth.

I didn't restart it with the keyboard because I have that disabled. However, I did restart the computer or logout/login to restart X.

I'll try to lower the virtual size as suggested, if that doesn't work, I'll post the log file.

reledi 10-22-2009 11:03 AM

Ok it kind of worked. My external VGA monitor is now extended on the left of my internal laptop panel, but the virtual screen only goes until 2048 wide, anything further than that is a copy of my laptop display (and it looks really weird).
Here's an image of it: http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/3219/snapshot1s.png

The right side (where you can see my quick reply) is the laptop display, and the left side (with the double display) is the external monitor. Also notice how my windows are messed up as they are missing the window commands (close, resize, etc).

If anyone has any advice, please tell. Maybe disabling 3D acceleration to increase the virtual screen size (but somehow keep DRI enabled)? I'll fool around to see if I can get it any better.

adamk75 10-22-2009 11:24 AM

Are you using compiz or KDE desktop effects at all?

Adam

oshunluvr 10-22-2009 11:33 AM

I don't know how else to say it. This is a driver limitation, not an opinion.

I have heard the newest Intel 2.7.2 driver along with the 2.6.30 kernel gives better performance but I've not read there is any change to the above limitation.

You can also get better performance if you have these in your xorg.conf Section "Device";

Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
Option "Tiling" "false"

As far as your missing window decorations (that's what they're called) I don't have an answer right now - try some web searching and let us know what you find out.
