how to remove some applications without affect others

Dudes,

Ok, I'm a Chinese. hope my English doesn't confuse you.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.04. I installed it in VMware 5.5.1. It takes up 2.8G after i installed it. But as time goes by, it is up to 4G now! The aim to install and start using Ubuntu is to learn some linux knowledge. I will never listen to music or use PalmOS wireless device. But these things come with Ubuntu. I mean they weren't installed by me, but by Ubuntu herself.

Now I want to remove those things that I won't use for the time being so as to save up my disk space. After I click to remove these applications in 'Applicatons'->'Add/remove software'. Warnings like 'There are dependencies to this application', please use 'Synpetic Package Manager'. But when I really use it to remove 'PalmOS' last time in a cloned Ubuntu, the 'Evolution' mail client went away with it as well. This is not what I want.

What should I do to remove exactly what I don't need, but not those I am using?

Does anybody understand me? Can anybody help me? I have searched my question from Google, and got a lot of answers, but none really helped me out.

Thanks in advance, hugh (hugh.shang@gmail.com)

You probably need to clean out the /tmp directory and run "apt-get clean" to get a lot of your space back. As to the rest, well, there's really no way to defeat package dependencies. It's like on a car. You can't remove the wheels without first removing the lug nuts/bolts.

Added:
Don't forget to get rid of unused junk in your browser's download directory.

Quakeboy,

Your 'apt-get clean' idea is really good.

I typed 'sudo apt-get clean' and entered it. A lot of update packages(/var/cache) in commpressed mode have been removed. Thank you.

Cheers,hugh
