vlc can play wma files: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

on gentoo you have to compile mplayer with win32codecs enabled.

mplayer is my personal choice. It works fine in the Gnome environment you appear to be using or in KDE for that matter.

I have tried compiling mplayer with win32 codecs. Most of the time it works fine. But I noticed that it was not able to play wma files that I encoded using Windows Media Player 10.

maybe the file is corrupted... can you post it?

VLC opens the file. Shows the track's length correctly and the progress bar is moving properly but there is no music playing. Nothing but silence!! I can't post a file that you asked me, can I?
It can't be corrupted because vlc has the same behaviour for all my wma files.

I checked a description for win32 codecs and it specifically said support for Windows Media Player 9. There are lots of other media formats. I stick with ogg and mp3 myself. Microsoft can't change these to make them only work on Windows.
